Mohali firm aims for the sky, to raise 10 storeys in 48 hours

21 October 2012

CHANDIGARH: A time-lapse YouTube video of a 15-storey hotel building being constructed in 48 hours was watched by more than 5.7 million people worldwide earlier this year. Mohali can now see this in real time.

In a few days from now, the city will become India’s first to witness the construction of a 10-storey “insta-building” or “pre-fab skyscraper” in 48 hours.

…..

A Rs 1,000-crore group based in Mohali, Synergy has tied up with UK-based Thrislington Products Company Ltd for the venture and the model has been approved by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)-Structural Engineering Research Centre (CSIR-SERC), Chennai.

The building has been cleared for the Zone V siesmic area, the highest.

CSIR-SERC Director Dr Nagesh R Iyer led the team that worked on the project for four months to ensure that the steel frame structure was strong enough. “It was the first ever test in India of this magnitude carried out successfully on a shake table for a steel frame structure,” Iyer said…..

Nuclear safety: India conducts out-of-pile tests

28 August 2011

CHENNAI: India is now conducting out-of-pile tests for the first time to ensure foolproof security of its nuclear reactors, according top scientists of the nation.
Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research director SC Chetal told reporters on Saturday that the test is the first of its kind and is being conducted at CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC) Taramani in Chennai to ensure the safety of the reactor before going in for in-pile tests at the nuclear site in Kalpakkam.
Currently, the Rs 40-crore collaborative project between IGCAR and SERC will test the functionality of full-scale prototype reactor system for Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor during quakes of high intensity through the 30 tonnes shake table, said Dr Nagesh R Iyer, director of SERC….

Test proves under-construction Kalpakkam n-reactor will shut down in event of a quake

28 August 2011

CHENNAI: Will the nuclear reactor being built in Kalpakkam shut down in the event of a severe earthquake? A test at the Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC) in Taramani on Saturday proved it would – in a matter of seconds. It also proved that the type of crisis in the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan after the recent earthquake and tsunami could be avoided in Tamil Nadu.

The SERC and the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) in Kalpakkam jointly conducted the test to see if the 500 MW Prototype Faster Breeder Reactor (PFBR) being built would stop generation. “In case of a snag in the facility or an earthquake, the nuclear power generation has to shut down. Otherwise, a major catastrophe will result. The production is stopped using shutdown systems having rods made of ‘boron’ (a metalloid element),” said IGCAR director S C Chetal. As per the safety culture in the Department of Atomic Energy, the safety of existing nuclear plants and those under construction is to be reviewed periodically…..
