India to conduct joint marine research with Bangladesh

On Board Sindhu Sadhana: In a first of its kind, will conduct a joint marine research with in its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) to understand the ecology of the Bay of Bengal that affects the climatic conditions of the region.

A team of scientists from the CSIR’s National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) will head to the Bay of Bengal in October-November along with its Research Vessel (RV) Sindhu Sadhana….

On The Frontline of Exploring India’s Seas Is This Floating Laboratory

ARABIAN SEA, OFF THE COAST OF GOA:  On board a state-of-the-art ship, a group of scientists is poring over data scoured off the depths of the Indian Ocean. The recently commissioned Sindhu Sadhana is India’s most sophisticated research vessel to date, they say.

Even though it has a coastline of more than 7,500 kilometers, India’s scientific marine exploration is still in its infancy, experts say….

‘Innovation is the Way Ahead’

CHENNAI:  Intervention is the core of innovation, echoed experts at the recent CSIR-CLRI’s (Council of Scientific Industrial Research — Central Leather Research Institute) Foundation day in the city. Emphasis was laid on the need for not just reproducing technology, but creating more of our own to find innovative pathways in the leather business. “India is amongst the leading producers of leather. The industry makes a revenue of 6 billion dollars, the only other country that is ahead is Vietnam with 13 billion dollar worth exports,” said Shafeeq Ahmed, chairman Indian Finished Leather Manufacturers & Exporters Association (IFLMEA)…

Indian scientists’ discovery can lead to development of new antibiotics

HYDERABAD: The scientists at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) here have identified a potential area where new antibiotics can be developed.

The identification of ‘potential drug target’ by CCMB scientist Manjula Reddy and her team assumes importance as the drug-resistance in bacteria is increasing worldwide and development of new antibiotics is declining over the years….

Neeri develops more efficient solar tech

NAGPUR: Even as the state government is planning generation of 200MW solar power using roof top panels, solar cookers, pumps, water heaters etc, city-based National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (Neeri) has come with more efficient and affordable models of these equipment using different and newer materials instead of the conventional heating materials like copper.

Neeri has put all these equipment for permanent display on its premises. Some of these are being locally manufactured while others are in collaboration with international agencies….

CCMB’s new facility to be opened next month

27 September 2015

HYDERABAD: The Medical Biotechnology Complex of the Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology (CCMB), located about 2.5 km away from the institute’s main campus here, will be dedicated to the nation next month.

Union Minister for Science and Technology, Harsh Vardhan is likely to dedicate the facility either in the first or second week of October, CCMB Director, Dr. Ch. Mohan Rao told reporters here on Saturday.

Apart from Housing a Clinical Research Facility and a Nanobiology Laboratory, it would also have Common Research and Technology Development Hub that would cater to research needs of small scale industries. He said that seven industries have already evinced interest….

“CSIR’s contribution to nation’s development significant”

KARAIKUDI: The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) continued to contribute significantly to the country’s development in the critical areas such as energy, food, water and drugs, Vijayamohan K. Pillai, Director of CSIR-Central Electrochemical Research Institute has said.

Addressing the CSIR foundation day ceremony here on Saturday, he said there was a perception among the public that CSIR was not doing enough but the fact was that it continued to contribute significantly in these areas despite shortage of funds…

IMTECH celebrates CSIR’s foundation day

CHANDIGARH: IMTECH, CSIR The Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), Chandigarh, celebrated Council of Scientific and Industrial Research’s foundation day on Saturday by organizing several events including a lecture by Dr Rajesh S Gokhale, director of CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, Delhi.

Speaking on “Science, Medicine and Respectful Insolence”, Gokhale said that the fruits of applying science to medicine, something that really didn’t happen in a big way until around 150 years ago, have markedly extended the life expectancy of humans…..
