India thwarts US company bid to patent pomegranate

NEW DELHI: India has foiled an attempt made by a US company to claim a patent at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on the use of pomegranate for the treatment of ulcers.

….The Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), a unit of Council of Scientific & Industrial Research submitted prior art evidences in December 2010 in the form of  references in three books from   11th century to 20th century…..

CSIR, HP launch cloud-enabled eHealth Centre

NEW DELHI: To bring diagnostic services to the doorsteps of people living in remote areas, the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and Hewlett-Packard (HP) on Tuesday launched a cloud-enabled eHealth centre here.

The rapidly deployable, fully integrated centre, installed in unused shipping containers, can be carried by road, air or water, to any part of the country, even in hilly areas….

Tehri dam sitting on an active fault: Indian seismologists

Hyderabad: There is an active fault beneath the Tehri dam that enhances the earthquake risk, scientists of the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) here have reported. The Tehri dam is located near Tehri town in Uttarakhand in the Kumaon-Garhwal Himalayas region….

Kolkata scientist finds kala-azar vaccine

KOLKATA: Kala-azar, known to claim a few lives every year in North and East India, including West Bengal, may soon be a thing of the past, courtesy an effective vaccine developed by a city scientist.

Nahid Ali, a scientist at the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB) who worked on the vaccine for 10 years, has published a paper on her successful research in an international medical journal last month…..

Safeguarding India’s ancient wisdom

India has a wealth of traditional knowledge and resources. How shall we protect them from infringement and theft? The Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL) been able to check the piracy of ancient wisdom related to medicinal plants cost-effectively. Other developing countries whose traditional knowledge (TK) is being plundered want to replicate the idea.

TKDL, a collaborative project of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy, is situated in Ghaziabad, U.P….
