Tummy out after pain killers? Kolkata scientists find a cure

KOLKATA: Pill popping has become a reflex action to aid quick pain relief, often leading to gastro complications and sometimes even hospitalisation. Now, relief could be at hand with researchers at the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB) here synthesising a novel molecule that helps shield the stomach.

According to IICB researchers, their discovery provides relief from the stomach complications (gastropathy) arising from the use of common pain killers belonging to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) group…..

Synthetic tuberculosis vaccines could save millions of lives

WASHINGTON:

Cases of one of the world’s deadliest diseases-tuberculosis-are spiralling at an alarming rate, due to the ineffectiveness of the existing vaccines, a new study including an Indian-origin researcher has revealed.

“Tuberculosis is a global health threat, and it is a highly communicable disease that may influence practically anyone and everyone,” says senior author Javed Agrewala of the CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology in Chandigarh, India……

Encouraging step in cancer drug research

HYDERABAD: At least 18 of the several thousand synthetic molecules screened for developing cancer drug showed promising results and have been patented by scientists of CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) here.

These molecules have been screened against cancer cell lines in in-vitro experiments and are now being studied in mice at the IICT’s Centre for Chemical Biology, one of the three R&D Centres inaugurated by Governor E.S. L. Narasimhan at IICT on Monday. He listened keenly when the in-charge scientists of the Centres explained the research being carried out by them…..

CSIR to set up first Rs 100-cr Innovation Complex by 2014

KOLKATA: The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will set up the country’s first CSIR Innovation Complex by 2014 at Baruipur near here, costing Rs 100 crore, to boost commercialisation of innovations, a top official has said.

“The innovation complex will come up in Baruipur on a 23 acre campus close to Kolkata at an expenditure of around Rs 100 crore,” CSIR Director General and Secretary, DSIR, Samir K Brahmachari told PTI….

India should get rid of fifth nation syndrome: Kalam

Kolkata: Missile man and former President APJ Abdul Kalam on Sunday said the country is suffering from the “fifth nation syndrome” as it is always the fourth or fifth nation to launch any mission like the space mission or nuclear programme.

He said the country should strive to occupy the number one slot.

Speaking at the foundation day programme of CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute in Kolkata, he said the country has been suffering from the “fifth nation syndrome” as whenever it launched any major mission like the space mission or nuclear programme it was the fourth or fifth one to do so……

Kashmir University signs MoU with CSIR-NGRI

Up R&D in medical sector

NEW DELHI: In a bid to boost technology in healthcare, Director-General, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, (CSIR) invited players in the medical technology sector to utilise the Research and Development (R&D) platform for innovation and research.
