NIO holds Open House

Students had a unique opportunity to see some of the equipment used by the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) in underwater studies as part of the Open Day organised by the NIO Regional Centre at Lawson’s Bay Colony here on Friday.

Though only a few equipment like echo sounder, digital side scan sonar system, tow fish, electronic total station, seismic catamaran, differential global positioning system, and marine caesium magnetometer were displayed, the students who turned up to know about it asked questions enthusiastically.

Principal Technical Officer K. Srinivas was seen patiently explaining to the students about the equipment and its use in studies in the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal. Maanasa, who has done her M. Sc Climate Science from Delhi, was seen listening keenly to various aspects of oceanography as the scientist explained to her about the research being done by the NIO. “I have a passion for oceanography. It would have been better if some more equipment was put on display,” she said…
