Swarm of jellyfish rings alarm bells in Goa

PANAJI: Swarm of jellyfish surfacing in estuarine waters of Goa, has set alarm bells ringing among the State fishing community as well as Government and research agencies as the notorious cnidarians are known to deplete fish besides threatening tourism potential of Goa’s famed beaches.

With swarm of jellyfish appearing on river banks and threatening to surface on the beaches too, officials are struggling to study the origin of the relatively new phenomenon.

According to National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) scientist Baban Ingole, some of the reasons could be increasing pollution in the river and the permanent parking of several vessels…..
