Indian digital library helped foil British firm’s patent bid

NEW DELHI:  An initiative by the Department of Ayush and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research helped foil a British pharma company’s bid to register a patent for use of ginger to treat cold and lung diseases. The British firm Nicholar John Larkins, London, had filed for a patent before the British patent office for a pharmaceutical composition using ginger for the treatment of cough and lung diseases. The Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), set up by the Ayush Department in collaboration with the CSIR, had circulated age-old manuscripts and unani and ayurvedic books listing the use of ginger as a home-remedy for treatment of cough and lung infections…..
