Seismologist warns of quake in North

Cautioning about the probability of a large earthquake of magnitude eight and above anytime in North India, a top international seismologist, Walter D. Mooney has called for setting up an early warning system to provide a lead time of up to 100 seconds to people living in cities like Delhi.

“A large earthquake could happen anytime in North India in the next 30 to 50 years” and there was a need to be prepared, the expert from the U.S. Geological Survey told reporters and during a chat with The Hindu on the sidelines of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), a premier earth science laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), which began here on Tuesday….
