Quake warning system to cut losses

HYDERABAD:The Indian Meteorolo-gical Department is contemplating the introduction of an earthquake early warning system on a test basis to alert people about any impending disaster in an attempt to minimise loss to human life and property. According to Prof. Walter Mooney, eminent seismologist from the US Geological Survey, though earthquakes themselves cannot be predicted, the probability of their occurrence can. Therefore, an early warning can be issued about an earthquake in a given area.

“Japan and Taiwan have successfully tested earthquake early warning systems. The US and Mexico are also going in for such a system. Now in India, the India Meteor-ological Department has plans to introduce similar technology on a test basis,” said Prof Mooney who is in the city to participate in the golden jubilee celebrations of the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI-CSIR)….
