NML study reveals magnetite ore a boon for industry

Being a unique reserve in the world, the multi-metallic magnetite ore deposit of Nagaland can be a boon for India. The pilot scale investigation at National Metallurgical Laboratory Jamshedpur has revealed the possibility of its total exploitation for the industrial development of Nagaland State.

NG Goswami, Chief Scientist and Head, Information Management and Dissemination Centre CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory said that with a view to comprehend the geography and geology of magnetite ore deposit, NML scientists alongwith geologists of DGM Nagaland visited the actual site of multi – metallic magnetite ore deposit at Pokphur village, Tuensang district Nagaland State at Indo – Burma border.

He informed that in the preliminary study on the smelting of this magnetite ore sponsored by Directorate of Geology and Mining, Govt. of Nagaland, Dimapur, National Metallurgical Laboratory Jamshedpur has shown the promise for the recovery of metallic values in the product in its report submitted in April 1993 and recommended for pilot scale Smelting trials with a view to establish the techno – economic feasibility of the process. In this regard P Ramachandra Rao, the then Director of NML, Jamshedpur visited Nagaland and met the then Chief Minister of Nagaland…..
