HYDERABAD: If the Americans have V8, Indians too will soon have their own version of the mixed vegetable beverage.

V8 is a mixed vegetable juice available in the US market and also some other countries and is a health drink that has many advantages. If the Indians are looking for something similar, here is some good news as the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) has begun research to make it possible.

The CFTRI which is part of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has embarked on necessary trials to come up with a mixed vegetable drink that can be packaged and have a shelf life.

Research on this is happening at the CFTRI Resource Centre in Hyderabad and the research results as of now are satisfactory. “We are midway through the trials and are happy with the way the research is progressing,” T Jyothirmayi, senior scientist, CFTRI Resource Centre, Hyderabad told STOI.

After the research and trials, ultimately the technology of preparing a mixed vegetable juice and packaging it so that it will have a shelf life for a certain period will be transferred to the industry.

The CFTRI which has its headquarters in Mysore is an institution for R&D in food science and technology. In the last 60 years of its existence, the centre has developed technologies and provided solutions to the food industry. In fact, several ready mix formulations like Idli, Dosa, Vada, and Gulab jamun were developed by the CFTRI and later transferred the technology to the food industry…..
