IICT to begin research to develop molecules for targeting cancer stem cells next year

HYDERABAD: The Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), a premier research institute under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), will be shortly commencing research to develop molecules that can act on cancer stem cells in the next year.

According to the IICT, the project is part of the 12th Five Year Plan, which will commence by middle of 2012. It is understood that several institutes at the international level have also embarked on research into this area.

In a conversation with Pharmabiz, Dr Ahmed Kamal, Head, Biological Sciences Division, IICT, said, “Drugs available now in the market work only on normal cancer cells. As they do not work on cancer stem cells and it results in the growth of cancer stem cells after some period and ultimately the reappearance of cancer. Our plan is to develop molecules basically act on the cancer stem cells so that it can help in rooting out cancer from the patient.”……
