Geo-tubes a Rs 6 crore loss: NIO scientist

PANAJI: Geo-tubes installed at a cost of Rs6 crore to protect Sinquerim beach from further erosion have been a failure and waste of money, a senior National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) scientist said.

“That was Rs 6 crore thrown into the sea,” NIO scientist Antonio Mascarenhas, said when asked if the geo-tubes laid at Sinquerim beach have achieved their purpose.

“This intervention was an utter failure,” he added. The NIO scientist said he had intervened when the government had laid the sand-filled tubes at the beach.

“My views were not considered. The concept of geo-tubes was taken lightly. Geo-tubes are to be employed at the initial stages of erosion. This was not the case at Sinquerim where erosive activity has reached alarming levels,” he said. Water resources department chief engineer Sandeep Nadkarni, however, denied that the geo-tubes experiment had been a total failure…….
