BJP, CPI opposes AcSIR bill for creating R&D academy

23 March 2011

Murli Manohar Joshi asked the government to withdraw the bill and bring it again only after incorporating suggestions made by the opposition. He said the opposition would definitely support a new bill with changes. In his presentation, Joshi said the country will not forgive the government if the bill was passed in its present form, maintaining that the Academy formed will not engage in any innovations. His suggestions to the government included strengthening the existing universities and starting under-graduate courses in universities not having them. “Innovation will take place through the villages… If you want research and innovation, then bring these institutions closer to the ground,” he said. He insisted that the country lacked scientists and experts and alleged that hardly any new innovations were made in Indian universities and institutions like CSIR. “Today, God forbid, if something like what happened in Japan (Tsunami and earthquake) happens here will you get Indian scientists? I don’t think so,” Joshi said. The debate on the bill will continue tomorrow in the Lok Sabha.
