Mangalore varsity gets Rs 9 crore ‘purse’

05 December 2010

MANGALORE: Giving incentive to research and development activities in university sector has earned Universities of Mangalore and Mysore a ‘purse’ from the Science and Engineering Council of Department of Science and Technology (DST).

Under a newly initiated ‘Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence’ (PURSE), both universities among 29 universities across India are eligible to receive Rs 9 crore each.

DST started the programme PURSE in 2009. Based on studies carried out by the National Institute of Science, Technology and Development Studies ( NISTADS), New Delhi, in the current year using SCOPUS database on publications output for the period 1998-2008, the department has considered supporting 29 universities for the research and development grant under PURSE programme. The grant will be spread over 3-years.

T C Shivashankara Murthy, vice-chancellor told reporters here on Friday that this is the single biggest chunk of grants that the 30-year-old university has received in its history so far. The University receives grants from the UGC for the 11th Five Year Plan as well as development grants from the state government, which is routine. But, the support of Rs 9 crore announced by DST under PURSE programme is special for the university, he said.

Interestingly, Mysore University is a rank above Mangalore University in two critical areas of ranking as far as research and development is concerned. These ranking include h-Index and National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources (NISCAIR) ratings and pertain to overall contribution made by universities in the field of research and development over a period of time in terms of quality and quantity, the VC said.
