Flowers win awards for their growers

LUCKNOW: Nervous excitement was palpable at the central lawns of NBRI on Sunday, as it was the turn for award distribution. The two-day `Chrysanthemum and Coleus’ show ended on Sunday, with the best entries being awarded.

NBRI has a collection of about 220 chrysanthemums. Several of these varieties, along with Coleus, were displayed for visitors. A total of 102 exhibitors participated in the show, which received 772 entries. The show is an annual event.

Lots of people turned up to not only appreciate the flower varieties but, to also get some know-how on cultivation of the winter-plant. Besides, cut flowers and special flower arrangements were also displayed, along with two new chrysanthemum varieties, which NBRI released this year.

On Sunday, total 307 (97 first, 91 second and 119 commendation) prizes in addition to 23 running challenge cups, shields and trophies were awarded to winners. C S Nautiyal, director, NBRI, also talked about the role of the institute in floriculture….
